About the Research on the Treatment of Smoking and PTSD project

The Research on the Treatment of Smoking and PTSD project is a treatment study sponsored by The Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety (CTSA) at The University of Pennsylvania. It offers an exciting chance to kick the smoking habit for people who suffer from from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and who are regular smokers. Read here to learn more about PTSD. The program includes the best available medication and counseling treatments.

If you are an adult who smokes but wants to quit and who suffers from problems related to a terrifying experience, this treatment program may be right for you. All medication and counseling services are provided at no cost.

People who participate in Research on the Treatment of Smoking and PTSD project receive one of two treatments:
  • Treatment for smoking cessation alone
              OR
  • Treatment for both PTSD and smoking cessation
All people in the study will receive 12 weeks of smoking cessation treatment, including the medication varenicline (Brand name Chantix) and brief weekly “quit counseling”. People who receive the combined treatment also receive psychotherapy that helps reduce their trauma-related distress. In this study, people receive treatment from an expert team in smoking cessation and PTSD. Our team includes therapists, psychiatrists, and a registered nurse all at no cost. Enrolled participants are compensated for time and travel.
